Missouri’s Hannibal. Children can engage in hands-on, immersive play that stimulates their creativity and senses at the Big Dirt Dig.

On Saturday, August 23, from 9 to 11 a.m., the Street Department maintenance site located at 701 Warren Barrett Dr. will host the Big Dirt Dig. Weather won’t be an issue because the event will take place under a large Quonset house.

Hannibal Street Department, Hannibal Parks and Recreation, and Parents as Teachers are the event’s sponsors. In addition to having a number of maintenance vehicles on show, the city of Hannibal will give children with enormous amounts of sand and dirt to play in. It is recommended that kids bring digging toys, trucks, shovels, and buckets.

“Some of the best learning comes through play,” stated Whitney Holliday, director of Hannibal Parents as Teachers, in a press release. With every scoop of sand or mud, I’m confident that every youngster will have a sensory-rich experience that fosters their motor and problem-solving abilities.
