On Saturday, July 5, 2025, Robert Lee Mejer, a renowned Quincy artist and esteemed professor at Quincy University, died in Quincy, Illinois.
Vincent Frank and Marion Elaine Jewett Mejer were the parents of Robert, who was born in South Bend, Indiana, on November 8, 1944. He graduated from South Bend’s St. Joseph High School. Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, awarded him a bachelor’s degree, and Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, awarded him a master’s degree.
For fifty-seven years, Robert served as a respected art professor at Quincy University. In addition, he was a distinguished master of the Transparent Watercolor Society of North America, a master fellowship member of the International Society of Experimental Artists, and a signature charter member of the National Watercolor Society. Robert established and oversaw the Gray Gallery at Quincy University’s Brenner Library. His art has been approved for more than 500 juried exhibits and displayed in more than 65 solo exhibitions. Additionally, he was chosen to receive the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Watercolor USA Honor Society. Although Robert’s life was centered around his painting, he also liked to play tennis at the Quincy Racquet Club in his spare time.
Vince M. (Fran) Mejer of Lincoln, Nebraska, his brother, Sue Archambo of Quincy, and several nieces, nephews, and relatives are among the survivors.
The following people died before Robert: his sister, Barbara K. Velleman; his parents, Vincent Frank and Marion Elaine Mejer; and his son, Jason Dillard Mejer.
Fr. John Doctor will officiate Roberts’ burial at Greenmount Cemetery, and his services will be private per his requests.
The family has asked that donations be sent to the Quincy Art Center (for visual arts education for children) or Quincy University (for the Robert Lee & Jason Dillard Mejer Visual Arts Award Scholarship) in place of flowers.
