Quincy’s Juneteenth celebration returns June 13-15 with trio of events scheduled

QUINCY — The Quincy Juneteenth community celebration returns for the fourth year at various locations throughout the city from June 13-15 and is organized by the Quincy Juneteenth Organization.

The event kicks off on Friday, June 13, with the Juneteenth community celebration, themed “Celebrating Freedom.” This semi-formal event at the Oakley-Lindsay Center features a condensed program with dinner provided by the OLC. Happy hour will be from 5 to 6 p.m., with dinner and a program from 6 to 7 p.m. Live music will start at 7 p.m. with Rhoda G., saxophonist from St. Louis, followed by the Sheryl Youngblood Blues Band from the Chicagoland area. The evening concludes with Boots on the Ground dancers leading the audience in line dancing.

The Juneteenth Community Festival will be held Saturday, June 14 in Quincy’s historic Washington Park from noon to 8 p.m. The festival features bounce houses, kiddie train rides, kid zone, Juneteenth trivia, cake walk, vendors, live performances, prizes, drawing and special appearances by Pete the Cat and Friends. Children are invited to meet and greet with Pete at 1 p.m. for photo opportunities and a free book. The dance party with Pete and Friends will be at 3 p.m.

The Voices of Juneteenth Community Choir will perform at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 15, at First Baptist Church, 739 N. Eighth. The choir is open to community participation and will be directed by Professor Anita Watkins-Stevens of St. Louis. All are welcome to join this event. Visit
