Quincy interim superintendent reaches out to Denman parents regarding state investigation

Quincy Cal Lee was introduced as the district’s temporary superintendent in a statement released by the Quincy School District on Monday.

The president of the Quincy Public School Board of Education, Shelley Arns, expressed her excitement in having Dr. Lee return to Quincy. Our students, staff, and families will benefit from a seamless and successful transition thanks to his demonstrated leadership abilities and close links to Quincy Public Schools.

Lee will be paid $1,000 per day to act as temporary superintendent for a maximum of 70 days. Todd Pettit will depart the District in November, therefore the board will be looking for a permanent replacement in the interim. After a summer in which parents at Denman Elementary expressed their displeasure over their children receiving birthday spankings and having their mouths taped shut when physical education teachers Jennifer Oitker and Kimberly Kirby believed they had misbehaved, he departs the district.

According to the district, Lee will start holding meetings with community members, employees, and district leadership right away in order to listen, learn, and assist in directing the district’s future.

Beginning his teaching career in the Quincy Catholic school system, Lee retired. He graduated from Quincy College and had previously served as Quincy’s temporary superintendent in 2012 and 2015.

I am singularly focused on student achievement/success both in and out of the classroom, Lee said in the statement. It was only after witnessing the same dedication from the Board and staff that I consented to return a third time.

Lee’s first public action was to educate Denman parents about how to contact the Illinois State Board of Education in the event that they had information about their child’s experiences or that is pertinent to the investigation.

Additionally, according to Lee’s letter, QPS is completely assisting with the inquiry.
