QPS Foundation facilitates fund to support newly-hired elementary teachers

Quincy The Quincy Public Schools Foundation has announced the launch of a new initiative aimed at supporting newly hired elementary school teachers. Each new K–5 general education teacher in Quincy Public Schools elementary schools will receive a $250 award to assist with classroom setup expenses thanks to the kind donations of local donors Kim and Kathy Humphry.

Beginning with the 2025–2026 academic year, this fund will give teachers direct financial support as they get their classrooms ready for new students. This support will cover costs for supplies, materials, decorations, and other necessities that are necessary to create a warm and productive learning environment.

This initiative is about more than just financial support, said Heidi Lanier, executive director of the QPS Foundation, in a press release. It serves as a reminder to our new instructors that they are appreciated, encouraged, and accepted into the QPS community right away.

Kim and Kathy Humphry, who understand the difficulties new teachers frequently have and wish to facilitate their transition into the classroom, are the ones who made the program possible. Kathy taught at Dewey and Iles Elementary Schools for the most of her career.

I have witnessed the need for those who are just starting out because I was an elementary school teacher once. According to Kathy Humphry, beginning a new position in education is exhilarating but may also be intimidating, particularly when attempting to supply and furnish a classroom. Our goal was to support our recently hired elementary school teachers by ensuring they have the necessary supplies to set up their classrooms.

We had no trouble deciding to make this donation. According to Kim Humphry, it’s a method to maximize every dollar through astute tax preparation and also truly impact our community. We are pleased to be a part of the win-win situation, knowing that our gift benefits local students and makes financial sense.

The Quincy Public School District has been generously supported by the Humphrys for a long time. Firewood for Schools was the name of the program the Humphrys conducted before establishing this new teacher initiative. People in the neighborhood received firewood from the Firewood for Schools program in return for a gift to QPS. This is the Humphrys’ final year in the program.

A nonprofit organization called the Quincy Public Schools Foundation is committed to improving the district’s educational landscape for both teachers and students. In addition to initiatives like this one, the foundation supports classroom grants, student enrichment, staff development and district-wide innovation.

Teachers starting K 5 general education classes in schools new to QPS or moving from another grade-level school in the district are eligible for the grant as newly employed teachers. Teachers who have less than 15 pupils in their classrooms or who are transferring between QPS primary schools are not eligible.
