QHS teachers will not report to school Monday as mold is found in ‘A building’

Quincy While Quincy High School instructors will receive an additional day of summer vacation, Quincy Public School teachers report for duty on Monday for the 2025–2026 academic year.

Surface mold was discovered in the QHS Theatre over the weekend, according to a news release released by Quincy Public Schools on Sunday. Clean Restoration was called in to clean the impacted area after maintenance workers closed down the theater.

The QPS maintenance team found that three of the six HVAC compressors that supply the theater were broken during the first inspection, which led to the high humidity levels in the room. The rest of the building was unaffected because that area has its own HVAC system.

The school system is doing air testing across QHS and in the A Building, where the theater is housed, in collaboration with Klingner & Associates.

The modified timetable is exclusive to QHS. Every student in Pre-K through Pre-K will begin the school year on time. According to QPS, the delay won’t affect students’ last day of classes.

QHS START OF YEAR PLAN:

  • Freshmen and students new to QHS will start on Thursday August 14

    th

Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors will not attend on Thursday.
  • Friday, August 15

    th

will be the first day for all students 9 through 12.

From QPS:

We have complied with all of the experts’ advice regarding this matter and have even gone above and beyond several of their suggestions. In an effort to put health and safety first, we will be rescheduling the start of classes this week so that we have enough time to finish our mitigation plan and obtain the results of the air quality lab.

Although we acknowledge that this is not the best way to begin the school year, the safety of our students and employees comes first. We believe that this small delay gives us the chance to make sure the building is prepared and secure for both employees and students.
