After reportedly shooting his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend on the West Side sidewalk last month, a 33-year-old man on felony pretrial release is now being charged with attempted murder.
After prosecutors presented the facts of the June 1 shooting in the 3600 block of West Polk Street, Judge Rivanda Doss Beal ordered Deontay Logan to be held.
A detention document claims that the 27-year-old victim became agitated when his ex-girlfriend contacted at approximately 3:55 a.m. while he was making his way home from the CTA Blue Line’s Homan station. He attempted to smash a window on the woman’s sister’s Buick when he got closer to her house, which was on his way home, but she ran away when she noticed him, according to the complaint.
Prosecutors claim that a few moments later, the same Buick drove up to him, this time with Logan in the passenger seat and his ex behind the wheel. According to the victim, he witnessed Logan brandish a gun and start shooting. As he ran away, he was hit twice in the upper left leg before passing out in his current girlfriend’s house nearby.
After hearing gunfire, an officer stationed in the neighborhood for the Chicago Half Marathon saw the victim running. According to prosecutors, he was discovered bleeding on a bedroom floor by police and paramedics, with a gun on a dresser nearby.
The victim later submitted an Instagram photo timestamped approximately an hour after the incident, showing his ex driving the same vehicle with Logan in the passenger seat, after license plate readers recognized the Buick, according to the detention request. According to reports, a search warrant on Logan’s Instagram account produced several pictures of him brandishing guns as well as a message advising people not to speak to law officials following his girlfriend’s arrest.
Later, Logan’s girlfriend was freed without being charged.
Logan was on pretrial release at the time of the shooting after being arrested in Wrigleyville on April 12. According to the police, he was found in possession of a baggie containing 100 suspected oxycodone pills after punching two males. Additionally, he was found guilty in 2022 of being a felon in possession of a firearm and was sentenced to 30 months in jail.
Logan is currently facing charges of aggravated violence by firing a firearm and attempted murder.
Logan is the eighth individual on felony pretrial release this year to be accused with shooting, killing, or attempting to kill someone in Chicago. Three of the 23 victims in those ten cases lost their lives.
The not horrible series
Our coverage of those on pretrial release for felony charges who have been charged with killing, shooting, or attempting to kill or shoot others continues with this piece. Following Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans’ public declaration that “we haven’t had any horrible incidents occur under the court’s bond reform initiative,” CWBChicago launched its series of stories in November 2019.
These figures certainly do not reflect the true number of shootings and killings committed by those awaiting trial for criminal charges. According to city data, CPD has charged 33% of homicides and less than 5% of non-fatal shootings since 2017. All of the not-so-bad stories are available here.
