STEM requires HALM.
All right, HALM isn’t a term. However, the terms “science,” “technology,” “engineering,” and “mathematics” are unrelated to the term “stem.” I create the word “HALM” since I can’t think of any word to describe what I want to convey.
HALM Literature, Music, Art, and History.
The current fad is STEM. STEM is not a terrible thing. We have benefited greatly from science. However, living a fully human life requires more than just STEM.
Additionally, STEM has a drawback in that it makes us believe we have power over the world.
As the saying goes, science gives us knowledge, and knowledge gives us power.
We can be destroyed by control. The tower of Babel tale in the Bible illustrates a significant human tendency. We can become so excited about our ability to rule that we mistakenly believe we are gods and take the place of the true God.
We have nuclear weapons thanks to science, which warns us that they may wipe out all human life in a matter of seconds. Much of the richness and beauty of life that has surrounded us since evolution created us is being destroyed by climate change, which is a result of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
We don’t have authority. That lesson is taught by the wisdom of various human traditions. Islam means “submission,” and the number of Muslims worldwide is nearly equal to that of Christians. The vice of our time is hubris. STEM gone crazy is what Hubris is.
For this reason, we must include History, Art, Literature, and Music (HALM) to STEM. We can become more aware of the beauty and worth of humility through such actions. God is significant, we can live fully despite our limitations, we can be vulnerable to one another, and vulnerability is a component of love, according to HALM. HALM serves as a reminder of both how mistakes can happen and how to learn from them.
We are tempted to control by STEM. We require HALM in order to be complete human beings who are enhanced rather than subjugated by the things we produce.
