MONTICELLO, Mo. — A LaGrange man who calmly walked into a local bank, demanded nearly $10,000 in cash, and then strolled across the street to turn himself in to police has officially been sentenced to five years in prison.
Jason Edward Day, 50, was sentenced Wednesday in Lewis County Circuit Court by Judge Matthew Wilson following his April conviction for stealing from a financial institution. The jury recommended a five-year prison term, which Wilson upheld.
On the afternoon of Jan. 8, 2024, Day entered Town & Country Bank in LaGrange and handed the teller a note demanding money. After being handed $9,918 in cash, he walked directly to the LaGrange Police Department to confess.
When approached by an officer outside the station, Day reportedly said, “I just robbed the bank,” and then handed over the cash. An officer noted bills still protruding from his jacket pockets.
A handwritten statement from Day submitted to police read:
“I walk in the bank ask for money they gave it to me. Then I decided to walk over to the police department and turn myself in.”
Security footage from the bank, witness testimony, and Day’s confession all factored into his conviction.
The case was prosecuted by the Missouri Attorney General’s Office after Lewis County Prosecuting Attorney Chelsea Fellinger recused herself, citing a conflict of interest.
Day has remained in custody since his arrest. He will now be transferred to the Missouri Department of Corrections to serve his sentence.
