It’s Butter Cow … er, Illinois State Fair time

The 2025 Butter Cow was unveiled Wednesday in the Dairy Building by Illinois State Fair organizers and Governor JB Pritzker of Springfield, Illinois.

Sarah Pratt, a sculptor, created a piece that embodies the spirit of the fair through the eyes of an adventurer, drawing inspiration from this year’s fair theme, Adventure Awaits.

Despite being the undeniable star of the show, the Butter Cow has a fun friend that explores the fairgrounds in search of hidden riches. The 13 vital elements that are naturally present in milk are represented by 13 hearts that are concealed between the two displays, just like in previous years. This year, Pratt was accompanied by her husband and their 21-year-old twin daughters, Hannah and Grace.

“This year’s sculpture is all about the heart-shaped rocks and hidden treasures that my daughters would always find in their daily lives,” said Sarah Pratt, a butter cow sculptor at the Illinois State Fair. Across from the dairy cow is our other sculpture, which depicts a dog digging next to a treasure trove filled with dairy items.

According to Governor JB Pritzker, the butter cow serves as a reminder each summer of what makes the Illinois State Fair such a unique festival based on custom, family, and enjoyment. The thrill of the fair and the adventure that awaits guests from all over the world are captured in this year’s design.

Since the butter cow is more than simply a sculpture—it is a state fair icon—families have made it a must-see destination during their visits to the fair for centuries. Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture Jerry Costello II commented, “We celebrate her unveiling as a kickoff to another great fair.”

Midwest Dairy’s Farmer Relations Manager, Kendra Anderson, stated that Illinois dairy farmers are proud to carry on the cherished butter cow tradition at the Illinois State Fair. We encourage visitors to the fair to visit the Dairy Building to view the sculpture, unwind in our Cozy Cow Lounge, and savor a treat like cream puffs or ice cream.

Throughout the fair, the sculpture will be on exhibit in the Dairy Building.
