Harrison Street to reopen Friday as bridge work is completed ahead of schedule

Quincy The Harrison Street Bridge will soon be finished and reopened, according to the City of Quincy.

The bridge is now scheduled to return to traffic on Friday, August 22, about two weeks ahead of its original September reopening date. The City’s portion of the REBUILD Illinois Bond Funds provided the majority of the $1.99 million project’s funding, with Quincy receiving $2.67 million from the state program.

Among the members of the project team were:

  • Contractor: County Contractors, Quincy
  • Design Engineer: Hutchison Engineering, Jacksonville
  • Construction Engineer: Klingner & Associates, Quincy

The new building is a three-span concrete deck beam bridge with sidewalks on both sides and two 15-foot vehicle lanes. Compared to the previous bridge, which was narrower and had only a 4-foot walkway on the south side, this is a huge improvement.

It is anticipated that the bridge would endure for 75 to 100 years with appropriate care. An estimated 6,150 automobiles will be served daily, enhancing local pedestrian access and traffic flow.

Our public works staff, engineers, contractors, and the community have worked together quite well on this project. According to Steve Bange, the City of Quincy’s construction engineer, “we’re proud to see it completed early and to such a high standard.” Quincy locals will benefit from this long-lasting bridge for many years to come.
