Hancock County youth turn projects into valuable learning experiences

CARTHAGE, Illinois. At the annual Hancock County 4-H Fair, young people from the 4-H organization recently showcased their enthusiasm and diligence.

Through projects, 4-H members can discover what interests them. Projects encourage participants to pursue their interests, talents, and passions on a new route toward enjoyment, job advancement, and a sense of belonging.

The 4-H fair’s busiest but greatest day is the general project judging day. We had more than 160 members display their creations this year. As the supervisor of the Hancock County 4-H program for the University of Illinois Extension, Madeline Davis remarked, “It’s really satisfying to see the kids be so passionate in telling the judges what they learned about their project.”

As young people strive for expertise in their project area, project showcases give them the chance to engage with subject matter experts who function as judges and mentors.

In order to integrate agriculture into classrooms and organize outreach activities, 4-H taught me how to lead with confidence, talk with purpose, and maintain a strong foundation in hard work and community skills. I now employ these lessons on a daily basis. Judging, holding workshops, and helping the upcoming generation of Hancock County students has been a wonderful way for me to give back to the program that gave me so much. According to 4-H volunteer and alumnus Sarah Seitz, “Once a 4-H er, always a 4-H er.”

At the Illinois State Fair 4-H General Project Show on August 8 in Springfield, young people who receive State Fair Delegate ribbons will have the chance to participate in competitions and exhibit at the state level.
