On Sunday, July 6, 2025, Gerald Jerry L. Hull, 79, of Quincy, died at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.
Virgil and Dorothy (Frohn) Hull welcomed Jerry into the world on October 31, 1945, in Quincy, Illinois. On June 21, 1970, he married Mary E. Baker in Ursa, Illinois. She passed away on November 16, 2019, before him.
Jerry was a proud 1963 Unity High School alumnus who stepped up to serve in the US Army, where he fought in the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1967. After coming home, Jerry discovered that farming was his vocation. He worked with his father on the family farm, growing maize, soybeans, and wheat while also caring for pigs and cattle. He continued to cultivate crops with the same zeal and commitment on his own farm in Honey Creek Township. After moving to Quincy in 1993, Jerry and Mary indulged their green thumbs by planting a sizable garden, cultivating a variety of crops, and carrying on their custom of canning their bounty.
Jerry’s many interests and skills defined his life. He treated his duties as a devoted custodian at First Christian Church and Faith Assembly of God with the same consideration and care that he showed his crops. Being a part of Ursa Christian Church, Jerry’s faith had a significant role in his life. He loved dancing and was well-known for his friendly smile and dynamic twist at the Eagles Club and Elks Club. Their love story gained new chapters of excitement as they traveled with Mary to places like Colorado, the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, and Mount Rushmore.
Jerry was known for being handy and was frequently seen repairing various things, tinkering with cars, and even building a three-car garage by himself. Jerry’s love of ice cream was famous; he was a regular at church ice cream parties and, as he grew older, he became an expert at bingo, enjoying earning tokens that allowed him to purchase his favorite pleasure.
Jerry was most happy when he was with his family. His face lit up with pride and joy whenever he had the chance to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who he was a continuous presence in their lives. His grandchildren Alexis (Haistings) Haughey (Justin) and Zachary Haistings, his great-grandchildren Wyatt and Brody Haughey, and his children Benjamin L. Hull of Quincy and Hannah M. Hull (John Plisevich) of St. Louis, MO, all continue his legacy. Along with his brothers Gary Dean Hull and Larry Hull, he also leaves behind his sisters Becky Bradbury (Earl) and Dixie Croxton (Ron).
Jerry’s parents, Virgil and Dorothy Hull, his sister-in-law, Sonja Hull, and his cherished wife, Mary, all passed away before him.
