Quincy Just after 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, the Quincy Fire Department was called to a residential structure fire in a duplex at 636/638 Jefferson.
Engine Companies 5, 2, and #4 of the Quincy Fire Department responded, along with the incident commander. When Engine Company 5 initially got on the site, they reported that there was fire coming from the back of the building and smoke coming from the east side.
Engine Company 5 used a 1-inch assault line to launch the first fire attack. After arriving on the site, Engine Company 2 helped put out the fire by pulling another 1-inch attack line from Engine 5. After arriving on the site, Engine Company 4 installed a 5-inch supply line between Engine 5 and the hydrant. After that, Engine Company 4 was tasked with working on the roof at the back of the building to get access to the attic section and put out the fire there.
In order to increase manpower, a second alarm was sought, and Engines 3 and 6 arrived on the site. The 638 Jefferson address’s fire was put out rather fast. For the following hour, the personnel kept working to find and put out the attic fires.
By 3:15 p.m., the fire was out. Both 636 Jefferson and 638 Jefferson had residents at the time of the fire. Without suffering any injuries, the two residents managed to flee with their pets. Because of the damage, both families had to leave the residential duplex. The American Red Cross provided assistance to the displaced residents on the spot.
The cause of the fire is still unknown while the Quincy Fire Department’s fire investigators continue their investigation. The kitchen was where the fire first started.
The fire was not associated with any injuries. The Quincy Police Department, Adams County EMS, Unit 3A20, the Quincy Fire Department Re-Hab Team, Ameren Electric, and City of Quincy Central Services all provided assistance to QFD, which had 19 personnel on the site.
