WHOA maintains its gold-medal status. Welcome to The Daily Dirt’s Vol. 1,382: Three Thoughts for Today.

1. This hurts. It really hurts.

We have a new medal winner in our Great Plate Debate IV weekly roundup of the greatest personalized license plates found in Northeast Missouri and West-Central Illinois, but I have to be fair in the interest of journalistic ethics.

We are pleased to welcome MZNBLU 7 to the silver medal position today. WHOA leads the field for the second consecutive week. I detest anything related to the state of Michigan, especially its maize-and-blue college football team, as anyone who knows me even a little bit knows. However, I give this automobile owner credit for his inventiveness, and I believe the seven-part plate pays homage to either Rick Leach or Donovan Edwards. Just before I ate some of the delicious ribs at Kelly’s in Quincy, I noticed this plate in the parking lot.

(My only goal is to find a plate connected to Ohio State so I can throw MAZNBLUE 7 in the trash.)

2. Did you know (Part 465)

  • That the best name in MLB might just be Boston Red Sox outfield prospect Jhostnyxon Garcia nicknamed The Password who is expected to get a late-season look at Fenway Park.
  • That it is estimated the average American eats about 15 pounds of watermelon each year.
  • That if you count a cricket s chirps for 15 seconds and then add 37, you will have the approximate temperature. Or you could just look at the thermometer.
  • That popsicles were invented by accident, thanks to an 11-year-old named Frank Epperson, who inadvertently created the popsicle in 1905 by leaving his soda with a stirring stick outside on his porch overnight. The cold night air froze the soda, leaving the stick upright and the Epsicle was born. The name popsicle was created by Frank s own kids who called his invention Pop s sicle. Frank liked the name so much, he patented it in 1923.
  • That in the U.S., cherry is the most popular flavor of popsicles. Thanks again, Frank.
