Mayor, Quincy School Board president issue joint statement after confusion over student meal debts

Quincy Regardless of whether their lunch bills are over due, QPS kids cannot be denied school lunches, according to Shelley Arns, president of the Quincy School Board.

No Illinois public school student may be denied a regular school meal because of an unpaid lunch debt, according to the Hunger-Free Student Bill of Rights Act of 2018. There is no discussion of account status during serving lines, and every kid receives the same lunch.

According to Linda Moore, the mayor of Quincy, she discovered this week that some pupils were receiving peanut butter and jelly sandwiches rather than the typical cooked lunch. Following a request from the mayor’s office, city workers contributed $1,700 to help pay Bella Ease program students’ meal balances.

We want to reassure parents that their children are eating full, wholesome meals every day while they are in school. However, we are attempting to connect some of our most disadvantaged children with resources that do not require donations or financial support because they may have needs outside of school hours, Arns added.

After then, Moore and Arns jointly clarified that the funds were intended for Bella Ease and not QPS.

Mayor Linda Moore expressed gratitude for the community’s significant interest in helping children. We encourage you to donate through Horizons if you would want to help, as your money will go directly toward helping students after school.
