The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) recently updated its Athlete Safety Policy to prohibit transgender women from competing in women’s events. This move complies with President Trump’s Executive Order 14201, often known as the Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports.
Transgender athletes are not specifically mentioned in the 27-page policy, which emphasizes its dedication to providing safe and equitable competition for women, according to PEOPLE. In accordance with Executive Order 14201 and the Ted Stevens Olympic & Amateur Sports Act, the USOPC will keep working with stakeholders, such as the IOC, IPC, and national governing bodies, to guarantee women a safe and equitable competition environment, the order stated.
According to reports, the ruling administration asserted that allowing men to play women’s sports is unsafe, degrading, and unjust to those who identify as women by birth. More than two dozen states have passed legislation prohibiting transgender women and girls from playing women’s or girls’ sports, highlighting the ongoing controversy surrounding transgender involvement in sports across the US.
The Paralympic Games, which take place every four years immediately following the Olympic Games, are the top international competition for athletes with disabilities. There are two seasons for the games: winter and summer. The summer games will take place in Los Angeles, USA, on August 15–27, 2028, while the winter games will take place in Milan Cortina, Italy, in February–March 2026.

Additionally, the decree threatens to withhold government money from organizations that do not adhere to the policy. USOPC President Gene Sykes and CEO Sarah Hirshland wrote to national governing bodies (NGBs): “As a federally chartered organization, we have an obligation to comply with federal expectations.”
Our updated policy highlights how crucial it is to provide women with safe and equitable competition situations. It is mandatory for all National Governing Bodies (NGBs) to revise their policies appropriately.
About 50 NGBs that oversee the smooth operation of the Olympics have been urged to update their regulations since the Trump administration issued the directive. It may now be necessary for these organizations, which oversee everything from child competition to elite events, to impose changes even at the local level. (The Athletic).
However, other organizations have already adopted their international federations’ strategies, such as USA Track and Field. With effect from August 1, USA Fencing declared that only female athletes would be allowed to compete in women’s events, while athletes of all gender identities, including transgender women, non-binary, intersex, transgender men, and cisgender men, would be allowed to compete in men’s events.

The University of Pennsylvania will take away Lia Thomas’s women’s swimming titles and records after a federal investigation revealed that her participation violated Title IX, the law guaranteeing equal opportunities in education and athletics. Lia Thomas, a transgender woman athlete who recently became the first openly trans athlete to win an NCAA Division I championship in 2022, will be a victim of the new regulations.
Under new president Kirsty Coventry, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has urged the sports federations to make their own decisions. A number of sports, including track and field, swimming, and cycling, have tightened their regulations to prevent athletes who have experienced male puberty from participating in women’s competitions.
Donald Trump has been harsh on the matter, calling it a completely absurd topic, even though numerous other sporting organizations, such as FIFA and other federations, are still examining their regulations. We have yet to see how this specific issue will cause drama in American politics as the 2028 Olympics draw near, but it will undoubtedly get more intense.
