Saturday, August 16, 2025: Daily Dirt
Meeting King Large in a dimly lit alley is not something I would like to do. Welcome to The Daily Dirt’s Vol. 1,375, which consists of three thoughts for today.
1. No deep thoughts today, merely a little fun with some wacky but real names.
Let’s take a look at some of the more amusing names you’ll be hearing in the upcoming months as college football gets underway later this month:
(I should have given my son the same middle name.) Gold medal: Gideon ESPN Lampron, Bowling Green
Silver medal: SMU’s King Large
Godspower Nwawuihe, Army, bronze medal
Montana’s Tommy Running Rabbit deserves special recognition.
Other noteworthy people to watch out for:
- Memorable Factor, Duke
- Nitro Tuggle, Purdue
- Da Realyst Clarke, Kent State
- Isaiah Bullerdick, Charlotte
- Pig Cage, Louisiana Tech
- Hollywood Smothers, North Carolina State
- Badger Hargett, LSU
- Krush Sowers, Southern Utah
- Dude Person, Central Arkansas
- Wing Green, Campbell
2. Did you know (Part 458)
- That Samuel J. Seymour was 5 years old and was at the Ford Theatre the night Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, and in February 1956, at age 95, he appeared on and told his story on the TV game show I ve Got a Secret . He then died a few months later.
- That the original name for Google s search engine was called BackRub.
- That the game of Chinese checkers was not invented in China, but in Germany.
- That when YouTube launched in 2005, it was meant to be a video dating site. The slogan was Tune In, Hook Up .
- That outfielder Kenny Lofton and pitcher Tim Stoddard are the only players to appear in both a World Series and the NCAA Final Four basketball tournament and both attended the same high school in Indiana.
3. Forty years ago (1985) this month, you were probably singing these songs in the shower:
-
Loverboy by Billy Ocean:
Billy was huge in the Big 80s, and this song was one of the reasons. -
We Built This City by Jefferson Starship:
One of the great sing-a-longs of the decade. -
Boys of Summer by Don Henley:
My favorite song from anyone associated with the Eagles. -
One Night in Bangkok by Murray Head:
and the world s your oyster. -
We Belong by Pat Benatar:
My favorite Pat Benatar song will always be Hit Me With Your Best Shot . -
Heaven by Bryan Adams:
Maybe, just maybe, his best-ever offering.
Steve’s Daily ThoughtRobert Plant of Led Zeppelin made a statement a few weeks ago that nobody anticipated but that will live in indelibly. A few anti-American chants started near the front of the stage halfway through his performance in Harrogate, UK. He didn’t leave or yell back at the renowned performer. Rather, Plant lifted his microphone and started singing God Bless America in a low voice. Initially, he spoke in a single, steady voice. But in a matter of seconds, the 25,000 people in the crowd stood up and joined in, their voices rising to a resounding, unified chorus. The chants of anti-American sentiment subsided into quiet. In addition to retaking the stage, Plant served as a reminder to everyone of the importance of leading with poise rather than anger.
Every day, Steve Eighinger contributes to Muddy River News. Nearly 250 years have passed since we unloaded the can of whup ass on the British, and they are still furious about it.
