Thurman Munger, QUINCY-Assistant Fire Chief, said he is 99 percent certain that lightning caused the fire that broke out on the roof of the historic Villa Katherine, located at 535 Gardner Expy, at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Saturday.
He confirmed to Muddy River News that there was not much damage, as firefighters worked in the dark to react to hot spots after the electricity was cut off shortly after they received the report.
One factor that might have contributed to the strike was the Villa Katherine’s unique Moroccan architectural design.
Being up on the bluff, I’m 99 percent certain that it was lightning because it has metal steeple-like structures at the top.
According to Munger, the responding personnel faced difficulties since they had to navigate a four-story stairs in the rain and darkness. However, no one was hurt.
Although a staff member from the Quincy Park District was there, they stated that it was too early to comment on the possible effects on tourists.
According to the assistant chief, the roof was damaged, there was a lot of smoke, and putting out the fire required a lot of water.
Fire engines blasted the monument with light, but they won’t be able to fully assess the impact until daylight.
